Why is my CV not getting any responses?

A lot of people believe their CV needs to tell the whole story. Every job, every task, every bit of software they’ve ever touched, all laid out so nobody can accuse them of leaving anything out.

It’s an understandable belief. You’ve worked hard for everything on there and it feels wrong to leave bits out. But a CV crammed with everything you’ve ever done doesn’t actually help you, it just gives the person reading it more to wade through before they lose interest.

Why the everything approach falls flat

A CV isn’t your life story, it’s a door opener. Its whole job is to get you through to the next stage, not to prove you’ve thought of every possible detail. If a recruiter or hiring manager is reading a hundred applications for one role, they’re not going to read three pages of dense detail about a job you left five years ago. They’re going to skim, and if the bit that matters is buried on page two, it might as well not be there. That’s often the real reason you’re not getting a response, not because you’re not good enough, but because the right information never got seen.

How to shift the way you write it

Think about the role you’re applying for, not the career you’ve had. Think about what this employer actually needs to see and build the CV around that. Older roles or ones that aren’t relevant can be summarised in a line or two instead of a paragraph. Cut anything that only made sense in the context of your last company, like internal project names or acronyms nobody outside that business would understand.

Do this and your CV gets easier to skim, easier to understand, and far more likely to get you a response.
