What do I do when I can’t find the right jobs?

Job hunting is tough, especially when the roles you want just aren’t showing up. Instead of waiting for the perfect position to appear, try taking a proactive approach to find hidden opportunities. Here’s how to clarify your goals, build connections, and set yourself up for success when the right role does open up.

1. Get Clear on Your Ideal Role

If you’re not seeing roles that excite you, take a moment to clarify what you’re looking for. Knowing your ideal role can help you spot the right opportunities.

 START DEFINING…

✔  Your preferred tasks: What do you genuinely enjoy doing, like client support, managing projects, or organising schedules?

✔  Company culture: Are you more at home in a close-knit team or a larger, structured environment?

✔  Your non-negotiables: Decide the things you absolutely cannot live without. Does the role need to be hybrid? Do you need to work within a certain geographical area? What is your minimum salary level? This will help you to narrow down the opportunities when roles do become available and ensure you’re not wasting any time.

Having a clear picture of your must-haves and nice-to-haves helps you stay focused and communicate confidently when reaching out to potential employers.

2. Broaden Your Job Search

A narrow search can mean missing out on roles that align with your skills.

 EXPAND YOUR SEARCH BY…

✔  Exploring similar roles with different titles: Job titles vary widely so make sure you’re searching on each different variation. For example, if you’re looking for an Administration role, include “Office Coordinator” and “Administrative Assistant” in your search, as well as simply “Administrator”.

✔  Considering other industries: Many office support skills transfer well across sectors, so explore different fields that might offer the right fit.

✔  Extending your commute range: If you’re open to a hybrid role, you could consider areas farther out, especially if you only need to commute a few days a week.

Broadening your criteria can help you find new options you may not have considered initially.

 3. Revamp Your CV and LinkedIn

Use this time to update and polish your CV and LinkedIn profile so you’re ready to jump on opportunities.

✔  Tailor your CV: Even if you’re not applying yet, focus on making your CV relevant to the roles you want. For further advice on this, check out our Guide to Creating the Perfect CV.

✔  Update LinkedIn: Make sure your profile headline and summary clearly show what you do and the role you’re seeking. Consider asking former colleagues for recommendations to strengthen your profile.

A fresh, clear CV and LinkedIn profile can boost your confidence and ensure you’re ready to act when the right role pops up.

 4. Finding Opportunities Through Networking

When job boards aren’t offering much, networking is the best way to find hidden roles. Many positions, especially in smaller businesses, are filled through referrals. Networking is about building relationships, learning about companies, and positioning yourself as a candidate they’ll remember.

 HOW TO MAKE IT WORK…

✔ Identify target companies: Make a list of local businesses that you would be interested in working for. Often, small, and medium-sized companies don’t post every opening and may be open to proactive candidates.

✔ Use LinkedIn to find connections: Look up companies and see if you have any mutual connections. Reach out to people in similar roles to ask for advice on how to get into a role like theirs – the key is you’re not asking for a job; you’re simply asking for advice and people generally like to help. You never know where a conversation may lead!

✔ Engage with company content: Follow your target companies and engage with their posts. Commenting on their updates can get you noticed by the team.

✔ Follow up: If you’ve connected with someone, send a thank-you note, and keep in touch with them. Follow-ups keep you front-of-mind if a role opens up.

Networking may take time, but it’s one of the best ways to build relationships that could lead to future roles.

5. Contact Companies Directly

If you’re interested in specific companies, reach out directly to hiring or office managers. Many SMEs don’t advertise all roles but welcome proactive candidates.

Send a concise email: Introduce yourself, explain why you’re interested in their company, and mention the skills you can bring. For example:

“Dear [Manager’s Name],

I hope you don’t mind me reaching out.

I’m exploring office admin roles and am particularly interested in [Company’s Name] due to [specific reason].

I have experience in [relevant skills] and would love to discuss any potential opportunities.”

This approach shows initiative and can make a positive impression, especially with smaller businesses.
